Giving Eugene Another Spin

The next Tom Petty?

My buddy Eugene Edwards' debut CD has found a new home at Flagship Recordings, which means... he's now being distributed via Universal Music! That's huge! In fact, if you go down to Tower Records right now, you'll see his CD on sale in a prominent end-cap. I almost bought one just for the cool sticker on the outside that compares him to Tom Petty! Does that make my original issue CD worth anything?? In any case, check out my previous review for this fabulous record... and get your copy today!

Roy Rocks Rayburn

Planet Roy for Din Din

It seems like it's not even my song anymore... but that's okay. Yep, Planet Roy rocked "I've Got Time" for a sold out house in Costa Mesa! In fact, my party couldn't even get seats inside... so we watched from the patio. Albeit a little muffled, they tore it up! Still, I gotta say that my favorite part of the set was drummer Miguel Zuleta's first lead vocal performance of a new D.J. Jones song called "Every Dog Has His Day". Awesome stuff! Get out and see this band when you can. They are a ton of fun.

Let There Be Drums!

And then there were three...

Ladies and gentlemen... Mr. Tony Dare. Gary Fitch's dream to make my album happen has taken the next logical step. Drums! Despite what you see in the picture above, Tony plays drums too... like a champ! As a trio, we wanted to see how the songs would evolve with a little more instrumentation.

The entire group of songs that was thrown together on paper was attempted. "Just Another Reason" took on a very bluesy feel. Perhaps we were all imagining a Hammond B-3 in there somewhere. Some songs changed tempo slightly, but otherwise stayed close to their original incarnations. The only exception to that was when Gary took to the drums as he and Tony took off into a hard rock version of "Small Midwestern Town". WOW! I could only picture Rob Zombie handling the music video for that one. Lots of blood. ANYWAY...

Things wrapped up in the early evening with a few more new ideas and a room full of smiles. Sorry I couldn't stay for dinner with you guys. My baby awaits. So, until next time...

In A Time Of Trouble...

The Water Is Wide

I'm kinda short on words right now. Having family and friends in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, I am in awe at what I'm seeing on the news. It's hard to know I can only do so much to help those in need. There's been some brief conversations about organizing another grass-roots fund raiser like the one I helped organize after 9/11. We raised several hundred dollars for the Red Cross by selling t-shirts, CDs, and taking flat out donations. I don't have much of a war chest behind me this time, so if we do this, we're gonna have to be efficient, quick, and effective. Possibly something over the internet to reach more people. Don't be afraid to approach me with ideas. We're here to help each other along. Don't forget. For now I offer a song that I think captures the spirit of those who have resided in harm's way for so long. They have a long road ahead of them.

"River In The Rain" (Miller) - Buddy

Buddy's interpretation of this classic Roger Miller Delta ballad was recorded in rehearsal on April 14, 2003 in Long Beach, California. It was originally released on In A Van Down By The River In The Rain and eventually on Best Buddies Vol. 3 on Some Buddy Records.

Victims of Hurricane Katrina are attempting to recover from the massive storm. American Red Cross volunteers have been deployed to the hardest hit areas of Katrina’s destruction, supplying hundreds of thousands victims left homeless with critical necessities. By making a financial gift to Hurricane 2005 Relief, the Red Cross can provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need.

If you are able to, please take the time to make a donation.

Thank you,
Dave
