My Morning Jacket Tribute Album

My Morning Jacket tribute album
Buddy has submitted a version of a My Morning Jacket song for possible inclusion on an upcoming independent tribute album. If you've been to any Buddy shows, odds are we've paid tribute to someone who may have passed away at the time. Warren Zevon. Johnny Cash. The list seems to continue on as time rolls on. Well, this time around, we're trying something different by paying tribute to an artist while he is still in his prime. The artist is Jim James of My Morning Jacket. If you do not know about this band yet, do yourself a favor and track down At Dawn. It truthfully changed my life on one of the worst days of my life.

As for the details... the song we are submitting, "Phone Went West", was recorded live at the Liquid Lounge in Long Beach, California on June 17th, 2003. That night was full of magic, as I remember it as one of the best Buddy shows to date. The soundboard recording was captured and mastered by fellow-P.I.T. member, Mark Mason. This track was previously available on A Party In The PIT and Best Buddies: Vol. 3 (both released on Some Buddy Records), but now perhaps we can get our sound out to a few more folks that haven't heard us yet. Check back for details on when this project, The Way That He Sings, will be available. Oh, and don't forget to buy At Dawn.

My Favorite Revolution

Eugene Edwards' new CD

It's here! It's here! The new Eugene Edwards album "My Favorite Revolution" hits stores this week! I must say, I am very proud of our boy, Gene. He was ultra-talented from the first day I met him, and this debut solo effort has been long overdue. 14 tracks of pure melodic rock in the style of Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Crowded House and Squeeze (whew). Glad to see one of the founding P.I.T. members is on the brink of going big-time. You can check out some sound samples and pick one up at http://www.eugeneedwards.com/.

Among the rich material on this album, you'll find "I'd Like To Think So." This song was composed almost instantly by Gene at my request for a 9-11 Relief benefit CD (Buddies For America) that was available at a concert marking the two month anniversary of our nation's greatest tragedy. On Revolution, Gene has reworked the lyrics and structure of this song to give it a fresh appeal. And, if you listen closely on this album, you'll hear my own contribution to the grand effort. A couple years ago at work I uttered some corny line...

"You say this happens in life... and life happens `round here."

Gene stopped and asked me if I wanted to do anything with that line. I laughed and said, "You can have it." I was used to throwing away one-liners, as Planet Roy's Gary Fitch can attest to. Imagine my surprise upon seeing Gene play "Your Own Nightmare" for the first time. The song breaks down to a quiet middle section. Gene approaches the microphone... gives me a nod... and sings the line. Gene, nevermind what the Cap'n said about "write a word - get a third." This is easily one of the best albums to come out in 2004, and it's all you, my brother.
